Every day is an invention.

Every day is an invention.

About

Adult Life Lab is a short film and a community-based DIY filmmaking and art project. This multidisciplinary collaboration is about adulting, but the bigger story is how over 100 people in Turku, Finland, and Rome, Georgia (US), are making Henry's story come alive.

Meet Henry (a character many of us can relate to), who has never entirely adjusted to adult life. He finds solace in the company of three co-workers who share the same challenges. Together, they form a 'laboratory' that invents mostly failing devices to solve their adulting problems, but all they need is one to succeed. The friends’ playful solutions—like a noise-canceling sweater or business gear with a calming stuffed animal— eventually tap into heart intelligence, revealing the power of creativity and self-awareness in becoming an adult.

The short film (in production 2022-ongoing) involves many first-time cast and crew members and local organizations (Hacklab Turku, Ullrike Artisan Felt, and Yarn, Ekotori, Magic Film Academy) that are partnering with film professionals to make the narrative come to life. ALL is live-action footage mixed with 2-D animation and archival footage from Henry's invention journal.

We are fascinated by the science of global coherence and heart-based intelligence, as explored by HeartMath.org. With over 400 scientific studies supporting the concept of a "heart-brain," our project explores how creativity, collaboration, and these playful inventions can enhance well-being and problem-solving.

The videos and inventions created in Finland have appeared in three art shows (Pittsburgh, PA | Mt. Berry, GA | Safety Harbor, FL). Ongoing community events and art talks about solving the behavioral challenges of adulting through invention will occur throughout 2023-24.

His favorite hobby, besides sports, is DIY (do it yourself). He loves designing and building things, which is almost the same as what he does for a living. Tuomas is always busy with half a dozen projects, often planning the next one before the current one is finished. This passion led him to Turku Hacklab, an association for hobbyists like him, where he initially joined to access 3D printing. Now, many years later, he's the chairman of the Hacklab and the proud owner of his own 3D printer. After moving to a new apartment this year, Tuomas has spent a ridiculous amount of time building furniture and lights for the place. He often wishes there were more time to take on even more projects.

Cassondra's biggest adulting challenge is figuring out what she wants to be whenever she grows up.

It wasn't until about 28 years later that this seemingly unattainable dream became a reality. His journey into the world of filmmaking began with a role in a third-year student thesis short film titled Eräänä... Zombietrilogy at Turku University of Applied Sciences Arts Academy. After my retirement, I have continued to use my expertise in offering consultation, designing/assessing projects, and mentoring students and junior officials. I also watch closely what happens in the global and local politics. The fate of our planet concerns me a lot. To take a bicycle ride or a hiking tour along our river, Aura, is a daily necessity for me.

Tom Reeves
“Priest”

As an academic, Tom enjoyed teaching and research most of all. He served as the major professor for 35 doctoral students and co-authored 7 books and 200+ research journal articles and book chapters. His scholarly work has been cited enough to place him in the top 2 percent of most-cited scientists in the world according to a recent Stanford University bibliographic study. Becoming a professor has also allowed him and his wife, Professor Emerita Trisha Reeves, to travel beyond their wildest dreams, giving keynotes and workshops in more than 30 countries and all over the USA. While he is officially “retired,” he still enjoys research, writing, and speaking. And though it is difficult to contemplate life without continuing these kinds of scholarly activities, it’s time to focus on more quality time with his wife, family, and friends.

He creates painterly style portraits, some of which have won international recognition by organizations such as Wedding Portrait Europe, Master Photographers International, International Photographic Competition, and numerous photography groups worldwide.
